About a block down the lane, you'll see the white tents beckoning you with their goodies and good cheer... more      Getting around California (guest article) Of all the U.S. states, none is more diverse and exciting than the Golden State of California. Of course, part of what makes it so is its sheer physical enormity. In fact, both in terms of literal geographic area and the size of its economy, California is roughly comparable to one of its biggest competitors in the world of wine-making, the great nation of Italy. Yes, Italy, which is actually a fairly large European country. From San Diego and the Mexican border, to 350 miles north to San Francisco, Napa. the Redwood forests and the hundreds of additional miles north to the Oregon border, California is not a place you'll be able to easily bicycle across, though renting cars with bike racks might be a good idea. Depending on where you are going in the state, there's a good chance you will need a rental car. Getting around greater Los Angeles and most of Southern California, with its notoriously insufficient public transportation can be a logistical nightmare. Non-Californians fail to appreciate how distant all the major tourist destinations in the L.A. area are from each other. For example, if you are staying near the ocean in Santa Monica or Venice and want to visit Hollywood's Walk of Fame, you might be tempted to run to the bike racks for a quick jaunt over. Better be in good shape and don't forget your bike helmet! The trip is approximately 11 traffic-choked miles. Beverly Hills is not particularly close either, and the San Fernando Valley is a half-hour trip of at least 20 miles on the freeway. Would you like to visit Disneyland? That's about 40 miles south on the 5 freeway and it's not in Los Angeles at all. It's in Orange County, which is nearly as enormous as Los Angeles County and is roughly analogous to the size of New Jersey. In fact, most California counties are roughly analogous to states in the Northeast. To give you an idea of the scale, many if not most native-born Californians can vividly remember the first time they set foot outside the state. Again, you will need a car. There's a reason for all that traffic -- driving is really the only reasonable way to get around. The only cities in Southern California that are remotely manageable without a car, due to their decent local transportations systems, are the downtown areas of Long Beach and San Diego. That's it. The good news is that, while Northern California is no less huge, it is vastly more centralized. Better yet, its largest cities are served by outstanding public transportation systems. San Francisco has a variety of options, and the entire area is covered by the terrific BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) railway system. Many San Franciscans don't even own cars. Still, if you want to go off the beaten track a little, those rental cars with the bike racks we mentioned might still be an excellent idea to help you really see beautiful NoCal.
